The outer layer of the teeth is made up of enamel, it has an almost white color and it protects the deeper tooth structure which lies just beneath the enamel.

This layer of tissue beneath the enamel is called dentin, it has a yellow-brown color. When the top layer enamel of the teeth thins away, the teeth starts to look darker.

2. Acidic foods and gum diseases can also thin or wear away the tooth enamel. Although some people have enamel that is naturally thinner.

3. Also, specific beverages and foods especially too much oily food, can stain the teeth and eventually wear down the tooth enamel thereby increasing the yellowing of the tooth.

1. CHANGE YOUR DIET

One of the ways of reversing discolored teeth condition, is by changing your diet or the kind of foods that you eat ( if you are really concerned about the color of your teeth ).

Certain food or beverages which we enjoy actually contain properties that can stain/discolor the teeth overtime if not checked.

For example beverages such as tea and wine, contains tannin which gradually degenerates the teeth enamel thereby leaving the dentin exposed to stain marks or discoloring. But this can be prevented: ( that is if you are concerned about the color of your teeth ), simply cut down on your much intake of coffee, dark juices and acidic foods. Or you brush after taking them.

Medically, it is advised to give a space of 30min of taking your meal before brushing: this should keep you on the safe side, but personally i would rather root for abstainance.
Don't forget - you are what you eat.

2. TRY WASHING WITH OIL

Now note this, not every oils is suitable for this method. The way this method is carried out is by rinsing your mouth with oil for a minute ( after brushing ), then spit out!

What this does is that it pulls out the dirt and bacteria from the teeth and mouth. Some suitable oils for this method are: Coconut oil, Seasame oil, Sunflower oil.

Disclaimer: this method shouldn't be replaced for brushing.

Medically, this is still unconventional dentistry. There are no established scientific findings that the use of oils improves teeth/oral wellbeing. But there have been quite a good number of positive testimonials to the use of this method; and besides the recommended oils are quite harmless.

3. TRY BRUSHING WITH BAKING SODA

Baking soda have long been known and used as a stain remover.

As a highly effective stain removal, some people worry that it might be too harsh on the enamel, but research from 2017 debunked such fears and rather declared it as: safe - for - use.

Also on the plus side, Baking soda have also been known to fight off bacteria in the teeth and even the removal of dental plaque and tooth decay. A good run for your money, this is definitely worth a try !

4. TRY USING HYDRIOGEN PEROXIDE

The name Hydrogen peroxide ( also a effective stain removal ), might sound a bit hazardous but on the contrary, it is a mild bleach that can help to whiten stained teeth.

For faster result, you might want to mix it with some baking soda and brush for 1-2 minutes twice a day ( morning and night ) for a week.

Disclaimer: Hydrogen peroxide may increase tooth sensitivity, so it is adviced to discontinue if this is noticed especially for those who already have sensitive teeth.

5. TRY WHITENING WITH FRUIT

There is hardly any health discipline which doesn't employ the use of natural methods.

There are 2 common fruits which have been discovered overtime to contains enzymes that may help to whiten the teeth. These fruits are the Papaya fruit ( paw-paw ) and pineapples. Both fruits contain an enzyme that may help to whiten teeth.

Papain and bromelain, are the two enzymes present in papayas and pineapples respectively, the enzymes may both help to whiten the teeth overtime, when eaten regularly.

6. PRACTICE GOOD ORAL HYGIENE

And lastly, maintain good oral hygiene. Trying to employ the above mentioned teeth whitening procedures without maintaining a good and regular oral hygiene, would be quite counter-productive.

To reduce tooth yellowing, a person should be sure to brush the teeth at least twice a day. ( morning and night ).

Regular brushing, protects the enamel, removes stains and prevents gum decay. You should also try flossing occasionally too, as this gradually removes dental plaques.

Also when brushing, dentists recommend using a fluoride toothpaste as it is safer and beneficial for teeth: as fluorides have been known to fight and even reverse tooth decay.
